What This Design References
The artwork is based on Gustave Doré’s engraving of the rebel angels being cast out of heaven, from his 1866 illustrated edition of John Milton’s Paradise Lost. Milton’s 1667 epic retells the war in heaven and Satan’s fall, echoing passages such as Isaiah 14:12 (“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer”) and Revelation 12:7–9, where Michael and his angels cast out the dragon. Doré’s wood-engraved plates are among the most reproduced images of the fall of the angels; this one is set in stark black and white under THE FALL on a black tee.
